You Know You Live in the Desert When...

...it's February and the A/C in the car is already set to 69 degrees.

...it's February, and you can comfortably sport a tank top and flip flops to the park.

...you're worried about the little ones getting a sunburn when the rest of the world seems to be bundled up just to keep warm.

...a dog barks outside, and your 3 year old says "Oh, I hear the coyotes!"

...spring means checking the yard for snakes before the kids go out to play.

...spring means it won't be long before you melt into a puddle in about 2 seconds flat upon stepping outside.

...summer seems to be a game of survival.

...summer means the park is pretty much off limits...leaving you scratching your head to come up with alternate means of fun.

...people still think the same old saying "Yeah, but it's a dry heat" is clever.  It's not.  Not a little bit.

...half the population doesn't own a lawn mower.  Who needs to mow gravel?

...October means it's beginning to cool off.  Finally it's only 99 degrees instead of 100+.

...the sunsets are so beautiful they nearly take your breath away.

I'm from Colorado, so a few of those apply to me too. Then I moved to south Georgia and the ones about the heat applied there. But I have to say, I love Arizona. My sis went to school at ASU and it's not outside the realm of possibility that my hubby and I are going to think about applying for some jobs out there in the future.

True that!!!

Oh sure! Rub it in! I was excited because it was almost 20 degrees this morning with no wind! I thought to myself this morning, "wow, it is really nice out this morning".

It's not quite that warm here, but my boys were outside in short sleeves yesterday!

I don't look forwad to summer, though. I can't take the super hot.

I would take it! Here in KS we have gone 100+ day since it was in the 70's. It has been COLD! I'm ready for the sun and pool!

You are right, a blessing and a curse (she says with the heat still running)

So, there were 2 coyotes at my kitchen window today and Delaney goes,. "Wook Mommy... Cooooyotes...they pooping." Only in Tucson:)

I can relate to some of those- but certainly not all. We too, have to look for snakes in the yard. Our summer heat is the heavy humid kind that make taking a shower pointess if you plan on stepping out the front door. Even though we had snow this year- last year we had our A/C on Christmas Day- it was 84.

I loved this post! Very cute...makes me pretty jealous right now! Although I'm thrilled we're up to about 20 degrees, more light snow is expected today and through the weekend...again I'm jealous of your 69 degrees!!!
Have a great weekend!

It's getting warmish here too.warmer than it has bee anyway...I can't wait till Summer..I love it hot and the humidity..love it!

But..it does get damn hot in AZ and dry heat or not..it's still flippin hot. Do you have a pool?

...summer means that when hunting for a parking spot, you immediately scan the parking lot for a covered spot, or a spot with tree shade. You'd much rather take the shady spot further away, than a spot right in front of the entrance to the building.

I hate you!!! Just kidding ;-)

So I'm curious, what do you do if there is a snake in the yard? Throw things at it? Shoot it? Or just don't go out???

And why can't you play in the park, because it's just too hot?

Ohhhh, send some good old sunshine to Virginia!

After the first couple I was like, does she want us to hate her?? Then you got to the snakes and stuff then I remembered I like my frozen little life. Just kidding I actually don't...do you think somewhere in the middle would be a good place to live? Oklahoma or Arkansas or something? :)
Have a great weekend!!

Ha ha so true! Growing up I had it backwards. I spent the winters and most of the year in Utah with my Mom then during the hottest part of the summer I would stay in AZ with my Dad. It is so hard to make friends in the summer time in AZ when everyone is inside enjoying the AC and you can fry eggs on the sidewalk. (Yep we did it) Then we got to freeze all winter. Both extremes so not cool :)

You know you live in Utah in February when you hear 100 degrees and get jealous haha!

I am so glad that I don't live there. There is no way that I would survive the heat in the summer time that is for sure.

I guess you make up for the fact that while we are cold inside, you are at the park, then when we are at the park, it is too hot for you to be outside. I am envious of the warm February though. I love the coyote one, so funny!

I wish I was there right now! It's funny, your summers are like our winters...stay INSIDE!

I was completely hating you until the snakes..

Besides the snakes--- I am so jealous!! But its funny that the park is a no go in the summer for you guys and winter for us.

I guess I am sorry summer is on its way for you?

But I would love to be in flip flops and lathering on the sunscreen!

But it IS a "dry heat" isn't it! ha ha

You have NOT experienced heat until you have moved to Texas. Correction. YOU HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED HUMIDITY until you move to Texas.

but I think its hilarious that you all have GREEN gravel instead of grass. My folks live in Mesa and it is FUNNY to me

Becky said...

Oh man....I don't think I would survive the summers there!

Lol~we have coyotes here. I don't know why, but they live in the cornfields and howl at night. They go crazy if they hear and ambulance:)

I'm jealous! I'd love some heat right about now.

Will you post a picture of your gravel lawn? Pretty please?

So true. I just told my daughter today that we had to come home from the park so she didn't get sunburned.

I'm from Upstate NY. It is so neat reading about another part of the country. :-)

Ha! This made me laugh. My sister-in-law lives in Mesa and she's always telling me how "cold" it was. They had to wear jackets. How cold did it get? I ask her. 69 degrees!

Officially JEALOUS up here in the great white north!!! ;)

The "dry heat" comment made me snicker. People say that up here in the prairies too during the 3.2 days of heat we get. LOL

Great post!
I've missed your posts while I was away this week. ;)

I love this! We live in Houston and am loving the 72 degree weather today : ) And my grandparents who are in Nebraska are getting snow!

Aundrea said...

I guess I should have included that the 84 degrees is rare, but it did happen. Weather here is weird. Last weekend we had 5 inches of snow- today was 70 and beautiful. The kids were outside all day in shorts!!

Hmmm, okay well I think that I will live here in MO during the summers and AZ during the winters then. LOL
